The bill, titled “The Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill,” was presented during plenary on Friday, July 5, 2024, and successfully passed its first reading.

Hon. Sokari disclosed that the bill is aimed at addressing critical needs whenever the state is plagued by natural disasters such as floods, oil spills, and fires, which have always had devastating impacts on many communities. The proposed bill seeks to address these critical issues by establishing a dedicated agency to oversee disaster risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. “The agency will coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders, including international oil companies (IOCs), government agencies, emergency responders, and community groups,” said Hon. Sokari.

The goal is to enhance disaster preparedness and response, improve communication among stakeholders, and provide timely support to affected communities, thereby reducing the impact of disasters on citizens and the economy.

Hon. Sokari emphasized that the legislation is crafted to solve societal problems and not to cater to any specific group. “Laws are made to solve societal problems and never to please a particular person or group,” he asserted.

With this agency in place, Rivers State aims to be better equipped to handle emergencies, ensuring a safer and more resilient future for its residents.
