Policeman Kills 40-Year-Old Benalayefa Asiayei in Bayelsa Over ₦200

A 40-year-old man, Benalayefa Asiayei, was tragically shot dead by a policeman along Azikoro Road in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. The incident occurred around 8 PM on Tuesday as Asiayei was returning from work in his Toyota Sienna.

State Police Public Relations Officer Musa Mohammed confirmed that the officer involved is part of the state security outfit, Operation Doo Akpo. Asiayei, an electrician from the Bobougbene community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, was driving with a passenger when the tragic event unfolded.

An eyewitness reported that the Operation Doo Akpo patrol had stopped Asiayei, demanding their usual ₦200 collection from motorists. Asiayei, who stated he didn’t have the money, protested that he was carrying only one passenger. Without warning, the policeman shot him.

As the scene unfolded, Asiayei’s in-law, Zaiky, happened upon the vehicle and corpse, raising an alarm. Eyewitnesses identified the shooter, who then fled in the patrol van. However, some had already captured pictures of the fleeing officer.

The police transported Asiayei’s body to Government House Hospital, Yenagoa, and subsequently to the mortuary at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

In the wake of the incident, Asiayei’s family is calling for justice. They urge Governor Douye Diri, the Inspector General of Police, and the Ijaw Youth Council to take decisive action against police brutality in Bayelsa State. “We are calling on the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Sen. Douye Diri, and the Inspector General of Police to urgently bring the policeman who shot Bena to justice. We also call on the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide to take necessary action against police brutality in Bayelsa State,” the family stated.
