FG TO RECRUIT YOUTHS FROM 774 LGAs AS HEALTH FELLOWS

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to enlist young individuals from all 774 local government areas across the country as health fellows in the forthcoming National Health Fellows Programme. This initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, aims to bolster healthcare services and infrastructure nationwide.

Announced through a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the National Health Fellows Programme is set to recruit, compensate, and equip youths with the necessary tools to monitor the performance of Basic Health Care Provision Fund-supported facilities.

In alignment with President Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing primary healthcare, the programme intends to upgrade existing facilities while constructing over 8,800 new primary healthcare centres, ensuring accessible and high-quality healthcare delivery nationwide.

The selected youths will undergo training to serve as trust agents, tasked with monitoring and evaluating the development and performance of primary healthcare centres. Their role will include ensuring efficient financial management and accountability mechanisms within the centres.

Furthermore, the fellowship programme will be administered through the Sector Wide Approach coordination office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
