…Threatens Legal Action Against Akpabio

Senator Ahmed Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, has formally appealed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio to rescind his current suspension from the Senate. The plea, conveyed through Ningi’s legal counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), warns of impending legal action should the suspension not be lifted within the next week.

The suspension, imposed on March 12, was a response to Ningi’s public allegation that the 2024 budget had been inflated by N3.7 trillion. Falana’s letter emphasized Ningi’s exercise of his constitutional right to freedom of speech during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on March 9, 2024.

The letter further accuses the Senate of initiating trial proceedings against Ningi on March 14, 2024, in contravention of legislative protocols outlined in the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2018.

Senator Ningi’s insistence on reinstatement and his threat of legal recourse underscore the mounting tensions within the Senate. The standoff raises significant questions about parliamentary decorum and the protection of lawmakers’ rights to express dissenting opinions within Nigeria’s legislative framework.
