Protesters Block Port Harcourt International Airport Entrance Over Lack of Amenities

Residents of Omagwa and Ipo communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State took to the streets today, Wednesday, March 27, 2024, to barricade the entrance of the Port Harcourt International Airport. The protest, sparked by grievances over the lack of power supply and other essential amenities, disrupted flight operations, leaving air travelers stranded.

The demonstrators, who gathered as early as 7 a.m., voiced their frustration at the absence of basic services despite hosting the bustling international airport. They highlighted the daily challenges of noise pollution and the absence of compensation for the inconvenience endured. Additionally, they decried the lack of quality educational facilities in the area.

Egbuninye Simeon, leading the protest, emphasized that the communities have been deprived of electricity for several years. “We demand compensation for the constant noise pollution emanating from the airport,” she asserted, expressing exhaustion with the prolonged neglect.
