OAU VC Orders Investigation into Death of Zookeeper Killed by Lion

In a tragic incident at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on Monday, a seasoned zookeeper, Olabode Olawuyi, met his demise at the claws of a lion he had nurtured for nearly a decade. The OAU community was engulfed in mourning following the fatal attack within the school’s zoo premises.

Olawuyi, a dedicated veterinary technologist, had been caring for the lions since their birth on campus approximately nine years ago. The unfortunate event occurred during an afternoon feeding routine when the 9-year-old male lion turned on Olawuyi in their den, despite his years of care and familiarity with the animals.

Despite valiant efforts from fellow staff members to rescue Olawuyi, the lion’s aggression proved fatal. Upon learning of the tragedy, the university management, led by Vice-Chancellor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, promptly suspended ongoing activities to assess the situation firsthand.

Despite immediate medical attention from the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, Olawuyi succumbed to his injuries. In response, the aggressive lion was euthanized as a precautionary measure.

The university management extended condolences to Olawuyi’s family, dispatching a delegation to offer support and comfort in their time of grief. Vice-Chancellor Bamire has initiated a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the root causes of the incident, seeking to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the OAU community grapples with the loss of a beloved colleague and caretaker, they are reminded of the fragility of life and the inherent risks involved in working closely with wild animals.
