FG Threatens to Reopen Borders for Cement Imports Amid Price Dispute

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning, indicating the possibility of reopening borders for cement imports if local manufacturers fail to comply with price reduction measures. Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Dangiwa, expressed concern over the disproportionate increase in cement prices, attributing it to challenges in gas supply and equipment costs. However, he emphasized the need for manufacturers to prioritize national interest over profit margins. In response, Group Chief Commercial Officer of Dangote Cement, Rabiu Umar, highlighted forex-related expenses and border challenges as factors influencing prices. The government plans to convene a committee involving manufacturers and regulators to address the issue.
