Tinubu and Governors Join Forces to Tackle National Issues

In a concerted effort to tackle pressing issues affecting Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, convened a crucial meeting today at the State House with all 36 State Governors and the FCT Minister. The high-level gathering aimed to devise strategies to alleviate the country’s current challenges, particularly the escalating costs of food and persistent insecurity.

In a statement signed by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, the presidency believes this pivotal meeting signals a unified resolve among political leaders to navigate Nigeria towards a brighter and more prosperous future.

Onanuga also disclosed, President Tinubu and the Governors reached a consensus to join forces in addressing the nation’s pressing issues, thereby alleviating economic burdens faced by citizens. Here are the key highlights from President Tinubu’s directives to the Governors:

  1. Addressing Insecurity: President Tinubu outlined three pivotal measures to combat insecurity, which has had adverse effects on farming and food production:
  • Increase recruitment of police personnel to bolster law enforcement efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Federal Government and the National Assembly to establish a framework for state police, replacing vigilante groups currently deployed in some states.
  • Enhance the capabilities of Forest Rangers and provide them with necessary armaments to safeguard forested areas from criminal elements. Discussions on modalities for state police and security issues will continue at the National Economic Council.
  1. Rising Cost of Food: President Tinubu emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between State and Federal Governments to boost local food production. He cautioned against excessive reliance on food imports and advocated for empowering local producers to meet domestic demand.
  2. Combatting Food Hoarding: President Tinubu urged Governors to emulate Kano State’s proactive approach in curbing food hoarding by unscrupulous merchants. He directed law enforcement agencies to monitor warehouses across the nation and thwart profiteering activities.
  3. Livestock Development: Governors were tasked with prioritizing livestock development, particularly in poultry and fishing sectors, to increase production and ensure food security.
  4. Clearing Salary Arrears: President Tinubu urged Governors to prioritize settling outstanding salary arrears, gratuities, and pensions to inject money into the hands of citizens, given the increased monthly revenue allocation from FAAC.
  5. Youth Empowerment: Governors were implored to create more economic opportunities for youths within their states to foster productive engagement. The directives issued by President Tinubu underscore a collective determination to enhance security, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall well-being of Nigerians, Bayo said.
