Ogun State Speaker Impeached

Kunle Oluomo has been ousted as the Speaker of the Ogun State Assembly. During a plenary session on Tuesday, 18 out of 36 members voted for his impeachment, citing alleged embezzlement of funds, highhandedness, and related offenses. Following the impeachment, Oludaisi Elemide was swiftly elected as the new Speaker.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) hhad previously arraigned Oluomo on September 6, 2022, before a Federal High Court in Lagos on charges of N2.475bn money laundering. Oluomo, along with three others, faced 11 counts of conspiracy, forgery, stealing, and money laundering, allegedly committed between 2019 and 2022 in Ogun State.

According to the EFCC’s prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the defendants were accused of pilfering N2.475bn from the Ogun State House of Assembly’s treasury. Oluomo, however, was granted bail while the trial is ongoing.
