Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum Issued Communique Urging Calm Amidst Political Tensions

In an emergency meeting held on December 17th, 2023, the Rivers State Elders and Leaders Forum, led by His Excellency, Chief Rufus Ada George, former Governor of Rivers State, addressed critical issues facing the state. The forum expressed concern over the attempt to impeach Governor Siminialayi Fubara, the inferno witnessed at the State House of Assembly Chambers, and other acts of lawlessness.

Key Resolutions:

  1. The forum regretted the non-response from Governor Fubara and Chief Nyesom Wike to letters seeking an audience.
  2. Strongly condemning the attempt to impeach the governor without transparent communication with the people.
  3. Demanding a thorough investigation into acts of violence and lawlessness in Rivers State for justice.
  4. Urging the swift rebuilding of the Rivers State House of Assembly, emphasizing the importance of lawmakers resuming their duties.
  5. Condemning the misuse of political power and recent defections without consulting constituents.
  6. Rejecting alleged attempts to manipulate legal processes outside Rivers State, emphasizing the importance of a fair and just judicial system.
  7. Urging caution from the judiciary and security agencies to prevent further tension in the state.
  8. Seeking intervention from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address the escalating situation.
