Nigeria is already struggling with mass migration of medical personnel to foreign lands. Meanwhile the UK government has announced the recruiting of teachers from South Africa, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria,Ukraine, India Singapore, Jamaica and Hong Kong under the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) programme.
The qualified teachers are intended to be recruited directly from their countries of origin provided their employer sponsors critical skills and visa for them.
The visa will be used along with the immigration visa. The UK government said in due course this type of visa would be opened to teachers from all over the world.
The challenges of Nigerians teacher include professionalisation of teaching, socio-economic and political environments, personnel in terms of quality and quantity, instructional resources and infrastructures. All this challenges coupled with poor enumeration will contribute to mass migration of Nigeria teachers to UK in search of greener pastures.
