With the launching of the much awaited Commonwealth Game 2022 at the Alexander stadium in Birmingham United Kingdom, Team Nigeria have presently won two gold and one bronze medals. The cheering team Nigeria is been placed ninth position on the medal table, following Rafiatu Lawal second gold medal in the woman weightlifting. Lawal set the record in the Women’s 59kg final, with a 116kg in clean jerk with 90kg straight snatch, making it 206kg in total.

Joseph Umoafia

The first Nigerian gold medal was won by Adijat Adenike Olarinoye in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. Olarinoye lifting new record of 92kg in a snatch and 111kg in clean jerk making a total of 203kg to win her gold medal.

In the euphoria of winning galore, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia won the second medal for Nigeria in the Men’s 67kg category, when he secured bronze medal. Umoafia lifted a combined 290kg in snatch, clean jerk to emerge 3rd position in the Men’s 67kg category.

So far the three medals won by Nigerians in the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth games came from weightlifting. Team Nigeria will be expected to clinch more medals from other games as they continue an upward move in the medal table.

As the game progress , Nigeria Contingent of 94 athletes will be competing with 72 countries, as the game which begins on Thursday 28 July, will be ending on Thursday 8 August,2022.
