Rivers United has won the Nigerian Professional Football League for the 2021/2022 season with 71 points as the second placed team Plateau United failed to maintain the chase when they lost 2:1 to Akwa United on Saturday 25th June 2022.
The Port Harcourt based side still have four matches in hand, while Plateau United has 61 points with 3 games to spare which implies that even if Rivers United loses the next four matches they will still be crowned champions. The league will officially end on July 17.
By standing, Rivers United has qualified for the 2022/2023 CAF champions League for the first time since the merger of the defunct Sharks and Dolphins FC by the administration of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.
